I’m excited to share a couple of art updates with you all.

Art Share LA

Next Saturday, I’ll participate in a series of brief artist talks at Art Share LA. Last Spring, I was part of the Ellsworth Artist-in-Residence program for 3 months. Six pieces that I started or worked on during that time are exhibited in the alumni group show currently on view in Art Share’s main gallery. The show displays the work of 9 artists from the last 3 Ellsworth AIR cohorts.

The artist talks will begin at 6 PM and will be in conjunction with an open studios event that starts at 4 PM and features the current cohort of Ellsworth Artists-in-Residence. The talks will begin in the AIR studios, move to the alumni gallery, and finally, the main gallery.

Low Hum Studio

I’ll also be part of a group show titled Mmm Food! at Low Hum Studio that opens next Saturday from 6-9 PM.

From Low Hum Studio:

Mmm Food! explores consumption in all its forms. From eating and smelling to seeing, hearing, and feeling, the artists in this exhibition capture the many ways we digest the world around us. Each piece examines not only food, but also media, literature, sound, texture, smell, and habit. Together, the works invite the viewer to consider how what we consume—literal and cultural—shapes who we are.

I’m grateful whenever I’m invited to participate in a Low Hum show because it gives me a chance to explore concepts outside of my comfort zone. Because I’ll be participating in the artist talks at Art Share, I likely will be unable to make it to this opening.

In a week, I’ll be exhibiting a few pieces as part of Art Share LA’s Ellsworth Artist-in-Residence alumni group show. Hello again! I’m writing to share that I’ll be part of another group show, Unrest, opening at Low Hum Studio this Saturday. The show will run until December 20th and is curated by Arturo Mejia at his exhibition space/art studio in Boyle Heights.

I am honored to be included in a group show with artists all exploring the theme of unrest, especially as it relates to the distressing effects of current government policies on our community. I made a small piece for the show. All the pieces in the show are up for sale, and proceeds will go towards the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA).

Here’s a bit more about the show from the press release:

Unrest brings together artists who capture the widespread dissatisfaction of the modern world, shaped by government policies. The exhibition frames unrest through two interconnected perspectives: first, the human experience of communities destabilized by political forces; second, the more-than-human world, where animals and plants endure the silent stress of pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. The artists in Unrest draw powerful parallels between these forms of displacement, urging viewers to confront our shared vulnerability and recognize the profound cost of a world out of balance.

40% of all sales will be donated to @chirla_org to support their mission on advancing the human and civil rights of immigrants and refugees.

Happy Friday! I’m writing to share that I’ll be part of an alumni group show, Homecoming, opening at Blue Roof this Saturday! The show will run until December 20th and features the work of 10 other artists who have had residencies at Blue Roof over the last few years.

I was fortunate enough to receive a 3-month residency and solo show at Blue Roof in the Spring of 2023, and it was a formative experience for me and my art practice (you can read more about it here). I received a generous amount of support that allowed me to experiment and make work I was excited about. The show is curated by Frida Cano, whom I’ve had the pleasure of working with as an art handler at the Craft Contemporary. Since I think a lot of the Blue Roof alumni have overlapping themes or materiality, I’m excited to see our works in conversation with one another! I will be showing a couple of small works I made during my time as an Ellsworth artist-in-residence at Art Share LA earlier this year. 😊

It’s been a few months since I last wrote a newsletter update, but I’m writing to share that my studio at Art Share LA will be open to the public this Friday, July 11th, from 6-9 PM. I am part of the 9th cohort of the Ellsworth Artist Residency at Art Share LA, and I share a studio space with two very wonderful and talented artists, Johnny Castillo and Carly França. It’s been so great to share a space with artists who also explore themes of memory, loss, and home through their work, yet in vastly different ways. We will give brief artist talks during the open studios event so if you wish to see or hear us talk about our work in person, please stop by! I’ll mostly be showing works-in-progress but I will show a couple of older works from my previous residency at Blue Roof as well. Open studios will happen in conjunction with the closing reception of the 2025 Summer Salon group show. See the bottom of this newsletter for more details.

Personal Note

I meant to share my acceptance to this residency in a newsletter much sooner but in late May, my father unexpectedly passed away. Although he was sick for some time, we did not think we would lose him so soon. Dealing with this loss has been very difficult for me and my family and I needed some time away from the studio to mourn and begin to process this grief. I still can’t really believe that he is gone…

For a long time, my artwork has been about my idea of home and has been influenced in large part by the makeshift, yet creative, solutions my dad would make to fix things/solve problems around the house, especially the backyard. Even though they weren’t always pretty, I thought they were somewhat unique or even elegant in their own special ways. I hope my sculptures or cyanotypes, sometimes referencing these dad solutions or other household details, can act as ways to honor the home my parents built.

In a way, having this limited time in the studio has facilitated the healing process. In other ways, it has felt a bit strange to come back to the studio with not only the deep sadness of losing my dad, but also the tremendous anxiety in the air due to this administration’s attacks on the immigrant community, to say the least. In any case, although it’s been a difficult time to make art, I want to acknowledge all of the help and kindness loved ones have given me and my family during the last couple of months. I know that, despite everything, a big reason I can finish this residency with work that I am excited about is because of this support so I am truly grateful.

I’m back to share that I’m part of another group show that opens this weekend at Low Hum Studio! Never Static, curated by Arturo Mejia, features works by 22 artists exploring the idea of movement through various expressions and mediums. I will show a couple of small sculptures I made as the Spring 2023 Artist-in-Residence at Blue Roof.

Hello!

It has yet again been a while since I last shared a newsletter. I took a bit of a pause from making art last year while working as an art handler for various institutions such as the Craft Contemporary, Hammer Museum, Fowler Museum, and MOCA. I’ve been learning a lot and gaining new skills that I think will all feed into my art practice going forward. For now, I want to share that I will be part of Art Share LA’s upcoming group show titled Out of Bounds, curated by Baha Danesh! I will show a sculpture I made during my time as the Spring 2023 Artist-in-Residence at Blue Roof and that I also showed last year at Brea Gallery’s Made in California group show.

The opening reception will celebrate the opening of Out of Bounds and another exhibition, Burning Bright: The Strength, Struggle, and Survival of L.A. Artists. Curated by Anne Martin of Sugar Press Art, Burning Bright is an exhibition showcasing work by Los Angeles artists affected by the recent devastating wildfires. That show in particular also acts as a fundraiser to support artists impacted by the fires. The reception will feature a special performance by Ibuki Kuramochi.

Lastly, I wanted to mention that the program that helped me become an art handler, The Broad’s Diversity Apprenticeship Program (DAP), just released its application for the upcoming year! If you or anyone you know is interseted in becoming an art handler, I highly encourage you to apply or share this information. To keep this brief, I am incredibly grateful for all the mentorship and resources this program provided. I’ve learned so much about art, gained new skills, and have met many incredible people in the last year because this program gave me the opportunity to enter the museum field. 😊The application deadline is May 9th!

I’ve been busy participating in The Broad Museum’s Diversity Apprenticeship Program (DAP), an amazing apprenticeship program that aims to diversify the art handler demographic. I learned so much in 9 months and I’ll share more about that incredible experience with you in an upcoming newsletter. For now, I want to share that I will be part of Brea Gallery’s 2024 Made in California group show! I will show a sculpture I made as the Spring 2023 Artist-in-Residence at Arts at Blue Roof, now rebranded as Blue Roof.

A small sculpture of mine is included in the upcoming Summer Salon Exhibition at Art Share LA. This is a group show featuring over 60 artists! The show runs from August 12th to September 2nd and the opening reception is on August 12th from 7 PM-10 PM. The exhibition will happen alongside Summer Salon Sets, multidisciplinary performances involving poetry, music, and dance starting at 7:30 PM.

I also want to mention some exciting personal news (related to art!). I just started a 9 month-long apprenticeship in art preparation through The Broad! The apprenticeship program is called the Diversity Apprenticeship Program and I am part of a group of 10 apprentices training to become art preparators through guidance provided by The Broad and several other partner sites in LA County. I’m looking forward to learning more about the museum and art handling worlds and increasing my skills in installation and fabrication through the various mentorship opportunities this program provides. I hope to learn enough skills to eventually help fellow emerging artists install and pack their works and increase the quality and scale of my own works!

🌟My last month at Arts at Blue Roof🌟

I can’t believe it has been a bit over two months since I finished my 4 month-long residency at Arts at Blue Roof. The A Room of One’s Own residency was one of the most supportive and generous residencies I have been a part of. I’m thankful for the dedicated studio space and resources provided to me during the program. I feel like I grew so much artistically in the span of just a few months. I especially appreciate the guidance provided to me by Lisa Diane Wedgeworth, Connie Martin Travino, Claudia Huiza, and Galia Linn along the way! I had my first-ever solo show and met so many wonderful artists during my time at Arts at Blue Roof. I was also able to share my work with many new and familiar faces. I am so grateful to those who stopped by to see the show!

Creature Comforts

My show, Creature Comforts, opens this Friday, May 5th, from 6-8 PM! I am excited to share sculptures and prints relating to my idea of Home. I’ll show the work I made during my time as the Spring 2023 Artist-in-Residence for the “A Room of One’s Own” residency at Arts at Blue Roof.

The show is at Blue Roof Studios and the address is 7329 S. Broadway Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90003. It will be on view by appointment after the opening until May 31st. First two months of my residency at Arts at Blue Roof

This February, I started my current residency at Arts at Blue Roof, a wonderful organization based in Blue Roof Studios in South Los Angeles. The name of the residency is “A Room of One’s Own” (ARoOO) and it is a 4-month-long residency that provides artists-in-residence with a studio for 3 months, a monthly material stipend, mentorship, and a 1-month-long culminating show (my show, Creature Comforts, will open May 5, continue reading for more details). The residency is full of incredible resources and I am learning so much from everyone involved. Check out some of the awesome previous artists-in-residents here!

✨In the studio🧵✂️🔨🪚🪛🎶✨

I can’t believe 2 months have passed since the start of my residency. Time is flying by really fast! At the start of the residency I had to readjust to making work in a large studio space so I began by making smaller work and experimenting with some materials such as floor vinyl, mosaic tiles, and cyanotype.

Having a large studio space again has allowed me to take advantage of having a lot of floor space and make use of the height of the walls around me. I’ve started laying out materials on the walls to visualize how materials and colors might look together before placing them on armatures and I’ve also started making wall pieces. I’m enjoying the process a lot.

Every now and then I play with the potential movement of my sculptures through stop-motion animation and that’s pretty fun.

Some highlights of the residency so far include:

• the residency orientation when I got to meet the executive director of Arts at Blue Roof, Lisa Diane Wedgeworth, the AaBR program manager, Connie Martin Travino, Summer ARoOO resident Dominique Moody, and fall ARoOO resident Alexandria Douziech. All such amazing artists!

• meeting my mentor Claudia Huiza, artist Kiki Seror, and previous ARoOO resident Dalia Palacios at an exhibition walk-through at Vielmietter Los Angeles for the “It’s Time” exhibition, organized by the Photographic Arts Council

• my ask-the-artist q&a video:

  Connie filmed me answering a few questions from an Arts at Blue Roof Instagram Q&A post. As you can tell, I’m quite nervous to be on camera but I hope this video is helpful to those who may want to know a little bit more about my work.

• workshop: I’ll be filming a virtual workshop with AaBR titled “Homebodies: Create a Creature Inspired by your Home” in May and it will also be posted to their youtube channel. I’ll email out when that is up.

• Show: My culminating show, Creature Comforts, will open Friday, May 5th at Arts at Blue Roof and will run until the end of May. It will be at Blue Roof Studios. The address is 7329 S. Broadway Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90003. I will send a newsletter update with more details as the date approaches.
